"Before he commanded the public's attention as a Doobie Brother, Michael McDonald cut a series of sides for Bell records. Although none of these tracks - many of them McDonald compositions, but also including a fine version of The Allman Brothers' "Midnight Rider" - were chart hits, they do demonstrate McDonald's distinctive style as a vocalist and writer at a formative stage.
As McDonald said of his music in a Musician article, "It was rough. I was kind of out there by myself, I think, surrounded by a lot of people who had more faith in me than I deserved at the time. I don't regret the experience at all, and if it wasn't for those people, I wouldn't be here."
This is the first time that his solo work from the early '70s has been available on an album ("Things just didn't pan out," McDonald has admitted), and the quality is commensurate with its rarity."
